Costa Rica Conservation Project - An ongoing effort of preservation, education, and community service
The Global Classroom has been working to protect some of the world's remaining tropical forests in Costa Rica for over a decade. Our focus is on land in the Monteverde cloud forest in northwestern Costa Rica, where we own a 500-acre biological reserve called Aula Global Reserva Biologica. Aula Global is home to the infamous Resplendent Quetzal, the Three-wattled Bellbird, the endangered jaguar, and thousands of other rare plant and animal species. Our goal is to contribute to the creation of a permanent biological corridor between our property and other nearby reserves.

Present Conservation Efforts

We are currently raising money to protect yet another parcel of land in hopes of expanding the Aula Global Reserve even more as well as the biological corridor that extends through the region. At stake now is a 70-acre piece of land along the ridge facing our research station. This ridge contains the well-known "Grandmother" Ficus tree. Resembling the Global Classroom tree logo, the distant sillouette of this tree stands out on the ridge directly across from the Aula Global Research station, and is not easily forgotten by anyone who has been there. As is often the case with remaining old growth forest, this land is being considered by woodcutters who have already been cutting in other areas just outside the reserve.

Common Questions about the project

Conservation Triumphs of the Past

We have most recently purchased a 135-acre piece of land that abuts the original Aula Global Reserve and continues the protected corridor along a ridge of breathtaking rain forest.

In November 2004, with the help of many volunteers, we reached our goal to preserve a 311 acre portion of old growth cloud forest in the Monteverde region of Costa Rica, making the area of our Aula Global reserve much larger, and protecting an important biological coridor.

About the Preserved Land

In 1990, The Global Classroom pulled together hundreds of volunteers, mainly students from New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont, and began a fundraising campaign to protect a special piece of threatened rain forest in the mountains of Costa Rica. Nearly a decade later, with the help of various private donors, the students reached their goal of $65,000 enabling The Global Classroom to purchase and protect this 100-acre parcel of land, thus creating the Aula Global Biological Reserve and Research Station/Lodge.
